Centered on the Spanish language and culture courses offered by MLL, this cognate covers the linguistic skills and cultural competencies needed to communicate within a Spanish-speaking environment and to interpret the cultural products of the Spanish-speaking world. The introductory and intermediate language courses teach oral and written communication and cover cultural practices and norms through examples from history, literature, and visual media. Thus they teach students how to communicate in the language and according to its cultural codes. The high intermediate and advanced courses engage students in the analysis and interpretation of themes and issues present in literature, film, and other cultural products from the Spanish-speaking world. The more advanced courses engage students in the analysis and interpretation of the workings of language itself and/or focus on specialized usage according to different contexts.
