Areas of Knowledge


The Areas of Knowledge general education requirement is intended to help students understand and appreciate intellectual achievements in major areas of human inquiry and creative endeavor. Students can satisfy this requirement through majors, minors, thematic or individualized cognates. The following resources will help students identify which of the three areas of knowledge designations (Arts & Humanities, People & Society, STEM) are approved for the following:

  • Undergraduate Majors and Minors: The table below allows students to select an undergraduate major or minor degree and identify the area of knowledge designation.
  • Thematic Cognates: The Cognate Search Engine allows students to search for thematic cognates by area of knowledge, interests, goals, and keywords.
  • Individualized Cognates: The searchable list found here includes courses eligible to be used in individualized cognates along with their area of knowledge designation.
